Simon Ranguis is a musician and educator of Uruguayan heritage – passionate about Spanish and Latin-American music. As touring musician, highlights for Simon include recording in Cuba with Afro-Cuban group ‘Zona Franca’; performing with Latin Grammy nominated band ‘Caribe Funk’ on their South American tour; studying flamenco guitar in Spain with Jose Antonio Rodrigues (Seville) and Manuel ‘El Carbonero’ Lozano (Jerez); as well as recording and performing with Aria nominated world-music artist Byron Mark on the album ‘Amalgamation’. Simon received the Helen Bainton award to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and completed his Masters of Teaching (Primary) with the University of New England. He is a recent graduate of the AKC Certificate in Primary Teaching and is currently employed as a classical guitar tutor and classroom music teacher in Sydney.

Session 5: 15.00 | Afro-Cuban Music – A Kodaly Inspired Approach |
The session will explore of key elements of Afro-Cuban music by applying a Kodaly inspired approach in their teaching using time-names and solfege. Students will gain an understanding of the socio/cultural context giving rise to the genre known as ‘afro-cuban music’.
Core rhythmic patterns (ostinato) will be explored, including: the ‘Clave’ (guiding pattern) ; ‘Tumbao’ (Bass ostinato based on pilar tones); and ‘Montuno’ (syncopated arpeggiated pattern). Students will apply their knowledge of solfege and time names to explore musical examples prior to transferring their learning to class percussion. Finally, a simple call and response will be established and the concept of ‘Pregon’ and melodic improvisation introduced. |
